"Crown Girl"
36" h x 18" w "This series of work is done by using a technique of cutting/tearing old, sepia toned, crumbling, pages from books and playing around with their positions. This serves a couple of purposes: it is a nice way to develop a sense of gesture because I can reposition the pieces for a more vibrant pose or cut out something that doesn't work. Hence, I hopefully don't get stuck with a stagnant pose. Secondly, the scissors help me to achieve a cleaner contour (outer tracing) line of the figure. "Working this way is probably a derivative of my use of sophisticated imaging software as a commercial illustrator. With the advanced computer software I am similarly able to manipulate, and create images. Commercially this is great, however, on a personal level I was dissatisfied with the lack of tactile ness involved. The smells, touch and colors of the paints, papers, brushes, texture and objects are extremely important to me." "Bump Girl"
18" h x 14" w "I studied art at various schools in California including Berkeley and San Francisco State but am mostly self-taught. Currently I live in Portland, Oregon with my boyfriend Bruce and two cats: Squeak and Harold, where I drink lots of good coffee, continue to paint and try to capture a wisp of this wondrous life."

"One of my oldest childhood memories are the thin, handmade, paper dolls, from newspaper, that my brother made for me. I don't really remember what they look like now and maybe it's better that I don't because they probably wouldn't live up to my minds version of them. I think that this series of girl, doll paintings were born from this lovely gift to me as a child. I paint because it gives me an opportunity to express myself and derive spiritual meaning." "The Ballerina"
20" h x 12" w "Very often I have no idea where an image comes from and am amazed at what I am capable of coming up with. Many times I start out with the intention of painting a particular image, color, or theme and am thwarted by unknown forces. Albeit frustrating at times, I embrace this element of the unknown. If the painting doesn't want to be red who am I to insist?" "Girl with Cat" 18" h x 14" w "My paintings are influenced of my love of cities and nature. I especially find urban life fascinating with its beautiful, old and modern buildings, billboards, bridges, railroads, produce markets, and myriads of varied peoples costumes, colors, sounds and textures. My images also reflect the alienation and isolation of modern urban life."
Jill Mayberg is a new acquaintance of Mary Lou Zeek. Mary Lou is fond of telling gallery visitors the story of when she met Mayberg at the San Francisco International Gift Show. After walking up and down aisle after aisle of the exhibition arena, and finding few artists for the gallery, Mary Lou saw Jill's booth and was immediately drawn to her distinctive artistic style and warm personality. "Of course it was the artist from Portland that I loved the most. It confirmed my belief that the Northwest has some of the best artists in the country." |
