Jed was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and currently resides in Salem, Oregon with his wife and three children. He graduated from Brigham Young university with a BFA in painting in 1990 and from Arizona State University with an MFA in printmaking in 1993. He maintains an active art career while sharing his time with his family, and his other career, as an elementary school counselor.

June will be a thrill for the Mary Lou Zeek Gallery as we welcome the wonderfully talented Jed Thomas and his collection of provocative oil paintings. Thomas‘s work is subtle, but rich in color and thought. His landscapes and figures are stirring and suggest a sense of beauty and a feeling of mystery that is haunting.

“My images are a reflection of my interest in being a story teller. The narratives are ambiguous, intending to engage the viewer with suggestions of allegories whose meanings reveal themselves in a subtle manner. The figures appear to be anonymous, their generalized features and details shrouded in shadow, implying a type of archetypal identity. Specific relationships between figures might be conveyed by the degree of physical distance between them rather than facial expressions. A particular landscape or lack of landscape, the use of colors, which range from somber earth tones to deep reds, and the slightly elongated figures, all refer to a surreal environment. I intend for my images to be provocative and suggest to the viewer they are getting a glimpse of an ambiguous drama taking place somewhere. I hope that my work conveys a sense of beauty and feeling of mystery to those who view it, transporting them beyond the ordinary.”
