Full of vibrancy, richness of color, symbolism and personal
iconography, the paintings and drawings of Salem artist, Bonnie Hull, have
been a local favorite for years. We are privileged to represent her and
thrilled to be able to present this new body of her work for the enjoyment of
art lovers throughout the region.

"Although I can't remember a time when I
wasn't looking at or thinking about art, I came back to serious
art-making in the mid 1990's. The paintings I'm making now seem like
the compression of years of looking exploding onto paper. Colors and
compositional movement are always present, but the paintings revolve
around a central idea, thought or phrase. Sometimes anecdotal, the
paintings address themes from the noise in the neighborhood to death,
grief, isolation and joy translated into my own vocabulary of color
and image.
"I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois,
educated at Michigan State University, and came west with my art
historian husband at age 26. Tagging along with an art historian has
provided me with rich opportunities to look at art treasures first
hand. We've made numerous trips to Italy and Europe and lived a year
in London, always museum and gallery going wherever we go, which has
been very important for me in developing my "eye".
"Like many artists I juggle family, job and
art making. Since 1991 I have co-owned and operated a restaurant (the
Arbor Cafe) in downtown Salem, and have come to feel that the pressure
of business has perhaps been a catalyst for the artwork."
