Pastels and Oils by Deborah DeWit Marchant
March 1 - April 2, 2005
Artists' Reception: March 2, 2005, 5 - 7 PM

"The Cat: A popular household pet and subject of humorous books, touching memoirs, cartoons and cute greeting cards. Also, generally, the ownership of four or more of which is considered a sign of charming eccentricity or in certain cases, some sort of sad loneliness typically and exclusively afflicting single women. In olden days, cats were considered attendant spirits, watching over their chosen human companions.

"But what do cats do exactly that continues to fascinate us, lure us into caring for them, loving them, living with them? Most of them do actually live up to their reputation for aloofness, arrogance and self-involvement. They scratch, they bite, hiss. They turn their backs when you call. They do purr, but not necessarily because they love you to touch them. They can make themselves purr anytime, and some are obscenely indulgent in this manner. So what is it?

"Well, I know it’s their beauty. They are beautiful. Their shapes, their fur, their expressive soft ears, their swaying tails, their hypnotic eyes. Where ever they sit, crouch, stand or lay they are a living object of beauty. And that is what my recent paintings are about.

Portfolio

In keeping with Marchant’s focus on images and the written word, her pastel work is known for its reading and writing themes. Through these subjects, and other daily life experiences, Deborah attempts to express the human need for comfort, communication, knowledge and freedom, the goals which often conflict and are difficult to experience simultaneously. Marchant’s work is narrative and realist in style. Since 2001 her works in oil have largely focused on natural subjects and the inextricable relationship between the human experience and nature.

Deborah’s photographs, pastels and oils can be found in many personal, corporate and University collections across the country, and are shown regularly in galleries in the Northwest. Both her photographs and pastels have been used on the covers of books, magazines and catalogues and have been reproduced in calendars.

In 1990, with the founding of their company Simple Minds, Deborah and her husband, Robert joined forces to further establish Deborah’s art career and expand her audience to a national level. Slowly the company has grown to include over 170 note cards of Deborah’s images, (distributed nationwide) reproductions and a web site featuring her original pastels, oils and photographs. Deborah and her husband reside in Portland, Oregon.
