Margaret Coe and Karin Clarke
Valley Landscapes
April 1 - May 4, 2003
Reception: April 2, 5 - 8 pm
"Valley Landscapes" is the premier of
a new series of landscape paintings by mother and daughter artists, Margaret
Coe and Karin Clarke. The layers of pigment will depict the Tuscany-like
farmland of west Salem, with rolling hills punctuated by clusters of trees and
farm buildings.

According to Clarke, who paints
acrylics on paper and oil on canvas, "What could be more
quality time than taking a drive out to the beautiful Oregon
countryside with my artist mother and painting all day (or
until we get rained out)? I love the rolling hills with wise,
weathered old trees, and the charm of rustic barns and
abandoned structures."
Clarke explores the edges
of her mediums: how acrylics can be used like watercolors,
leaving some areas transparent, and varying the surface with
texture, glazing, and bold charcoal markings. When
manipulating oils, she begins painting on location, then
returns to her studio to layer and add richness to the colors.
"The thickness of the canvas seems to call for more depths of
paints. I reflect on how I experience a place, and what I want
to emphasize on the canvas," she muses.

Although Coe has traveled
extensively and painted a variety of scenic images, the
landscapes of West Salem is one of her favorite locations. Coe
reflects on her subject, "The natural and man-made forms
provide the basic shapes for color exploration."
Coe, a highly awarded artist
from Eugene, has been a tremendous influence on her daughter.
"I feel so honored having this special show with my mother,"
says Clarke of this unique opportunity at the Mary Lou Zeek
Gallery.
